Signing Up for a Language Course: ESL Listening Dialogue (A2–B1)

Dialogue Script (2 speakers)

Receptionist: Hello, welcome to City Language School. How can I help? Ana: Hi. I'm interested in your English courses. Receptionist: Great. Is it for work or for fun? Ana: For work, mostly. I need to write emails and talk to clients. Receptionist: Then our Business English course is a good choice. First, you'll take a placement test. Ana: How long does the test take? Receptionist: About forty minutes. You can do it online at home. Ana: Okay. And when are the classes? Receptionist: We have an intensive course every morning, or an evening course two nights a week. Ana: I work during the day, so the evening course is better. Receptionist: That's Tuesday and Thursday, from six to eight. It costs three hundred and fifty dollars for ten weeks. Ana: Does that include the books? Receptionist: Yes, all the materials are included. Ana: Perfect. How do I sign up? Receptionist: Fill in this form and pay a fifty-dollar deposit today. You pay the rest before the first class. Ana: Great. Let's do it.

How to Use It in Class

  • Before listening: pre-teach the key vocabulary and ask students to predict what happens.
  • First listen: students answer the comprehension questions without the script.
  • Second listen: give out the script and have students underline useful phrases.
  • Speaking: pairs role-play the dialogue, then change one detail and improvise.
