Omar: I know it's an unpopular view, but I think the company is right to bring people back to the office three days a week. Ruth: Really? Our team has never been more productive. We hit every deadline last year while working almost entirely from home. Omar: I'll concede that for experienced people like us, remote work is efficient. But think about the graduates. They learn by overhearing conversations and asking quick questions. Ruth: That's true, but that's a management problem, not a location problem. You can mentor people perfectly well over video if you make the effort. Omar: In theory, yes. In practice, people don't make the effort. And there's another issue: proximity bias. Ruth: Meaning managers promote the people they actually see? Omar: Exactly. If half the team is in the office and half isn't, the remote half may quietly fall behind in their careers. Ruth: Hmm. That's a fair point, I admit. Still, forcing everyone back ignores the downside of commuting. Some of our team spend three hours a day travelling. Omar: And remote work blurs the line between home and work. I've seen people answering emails at midnight. Ruth: So it's a double-edged sword either way. Omar: Precisely. Which is why I'd argue for a hybrid model with clear rules, rather than everyone doing whatever they like. Ruth: I could live with that, provided the office days are for collaboration, not for sitting on video calls with people in other cities. Omar: Agreed. There's nothing more pointless than commuting to join a video meeting.
