Host1:Hey Leo! Hey Mia! Oh, you look tired… Did you go to bed late again?
Host1:Hi Sam. Yes I did. I must pass today’s math test, so I had to revise for it… until midnight. I’d like my marks to go up to be sure I’ll go to university.
Host2:And I also went to bed a little late. I was looking for some information on the kind of studies I want to do. See, I’m going to be a vet and work in a clinic that treats animals the best possible way.
Host1:That’s a cool idea of job, Mia. And it mustn’t take too much time to become a vet, right?
Host2:Oh, quite the opposite. I found out online that I must do a long training course. After this last year in high school, I must study for five years at university. It won’t be easy, so from now on, I won’t waste my time. For example, I’m going to stop partying twice a week.
Host1:That makes me think of the long studies my dad had to do before becoming an engineer. Now, he works in a big factory that creates green technologies. He loves his job because he helps the environment and fights climate change. My goal is to follow his footsteps. I’m going to be an engineer too.
Host1:That sounds like a lot of responsibilities, Leo. Will you work in a factory like him, or in an office?
Host1:Probably in an office. I must be good at maths for that. For example, I know that 100 times 10, equals 1000, but I’ll have to learn much more complex things! I’m clearly going to do my math and science homework more often.
Host1:Well, luckily, computers do most of the calculations now! Mia, what about your mum? Does she work with animals and that’s why you would like to be a vet?
Host2:No, she doesn’t. She is a travel agent in a railway station. But she’s rarely sitting behind a desk. She usually stands up all day to guide visitors, and sometimes, she checks ticket validity on trains… And she gets insulted by angry passengers who break the rules. She is exhausted when she gets back home. Once, she told me: “Mia, when you grow up, remember that you mustn’t choose a job just for the money. You have to enjoy it, to be passionate.” That’s why, since I love taking care of animals, being a vet is perfect for me.
Host1:Will you earn a lot of money as a vet?
Host2:In the beginning, I won’t. But after a few years, I’m going to open my own clinic, so I think I’ll make enough money to live correctly. I’m going to save all my pocket money from now on to buy my first medical equipment. And I know I’ll have to work hard. What about you, Sam?
Host1:Well, both of my parents are farmers, and, traditionally, it’s a family business. But recently, they told me I don’t have to take over the farm, because one of my cousins is going to do it. So, I can focus on my dream idea.
Host2:Which is?
Host1:As I wouldn’t like to stay in an office, and I know I will not work in any kind of shop either, I’ve thought about it, and I’m going to be a flight attendant! I could do this as a part-time job, because I’ve heard it’s well paid. So I’ll have free time between the flights. And it’s perfect to travel and see the world!
Host1:Ooh, that’s a big change from your parents’ jobs!
Host2:I thought you wanted to do an apprenticeship as a mechanic, like my father. He said he’s going to accept you as his apprentice if you want to.
Host1:I know. It’s very nice of him. Your father inspired me because he is very good at repairing cars in his garage, but… I won't do it. After all, we didn’t sign any contract, it was just an idea. I don't have to do the same job. I really want to fly!
Host2:I understand. It’s ok. But Sam, being a flight attendant isn’t just a holiday. You mustn't stay out late when you have a flight the next morning. You must be very responsible for the passengers’ safety.
Host1:I know. At least I don't have to carry heavy bags, the airport machines do it!
Host1:Do you know how much it can cost you to become a flight attendant? I heard it’s not for free…
Host1:Yeah… It goes from £150 to £1500, depending on various criteria. So from now on, I must do a lot of babysitting to collect all that money. Fortunately, I’m not alone, my family will help me if I need it.
Host2:Don’t forget that you must speak English perfectly, and it’s highly recommended to speak Spanish and French too. Chinese is also a plus. A good steward must talk to people from different countries.
Host1:That’s why I won’t skip any languages classes.
Host1:Are you going to revise your vocabulary and grammar more often, and play videogames less often, then?
Host1:Yes, of course!
Host1:That sounds nice! My dad always says that the working world is changing fast. He says we must learn new things every day.
Host2:He’s right. Oh, the bell is going to ring. We mustn’t be late. Let’s move to Building 3 for our next class. Wait a second… Ah, there it is… I almost forgot my umbrella. It’s starting to rain outside.
Host1:See you at 5 p.m. at the high school’s community garden, guys! We’ll catch a bus from there.
Host1:Ok, bye!
Host2:See you later!
